From Kathy Keithley, C/1978: "This comes out of the ’78 year book. As far as I know, Melissa Wood ’78 was the first female mascot. During my first year, Tom Farnsworth (deceased) ’75 was our mascot."
Of course, this may also reflect the increasing incidence of gender confusion that began in the 70s.
